Cardinals Drop Fifth Set to Huskies in Season Finale

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team finished their season today (Nov. 11) as they dropped a five-setter at Michigan Technoloigcal University with scores of 22-25, 25-19, 18-25 and 15-6.

The Cardinals took the early advantage in the match and never fell behind, taking the first set with a 25-22 decision. However, the Huskies responded in the second set as they took a big lead midway through the game en route to knotting up the match.

Michigan Tech held on in the third set as the Cardinals tied up the set with a late comeback, but the Huskies took the final two points for the 27-25 victory as SVSU trailed 2-1 headed into the fourth set. SVSU would respond in the fourth set with a 25-18 victory to push the match to a fifth set.

The Huskies prevailed in the final set by a score of 15-6 as they closed out the Cardinals.

The SVSU offense was paced by Lyndsay Reynolds (Saline, Mich.) who recorded a team-high 14 kills on 32 attacks (.344), while Chili's 'Player of the Match' Kate Czopek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) had an impressive all-around performance with 13 kills and a season-high 33 digs. 

Junior Nicole Adam (Sterling Heights, Mich.) posted a career-best 21 digs, while senior libero Laurel Mattson (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood HS) posted 11 digs in her final match as a Cardinal.

Senior setter Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) orchestrated the SVSU offense with 44 assists, 11 digs and six kills in the final match of her SVSU volleyball career. Breault finishes fifth on the all-time assists list at Saginaw Valley with 2,827.

Julia Thomas (Novi, Mich.) added 11 kills, while Brooke Tiller (Maumee, Ohio) recorded 12 digs on the afternoon.

Saginaw Valley finished the season with a record of 11-19 overall and 6-12 in the GLIAC.
