Cardinals Battle No. 25 Bulldogs on Senior Day; Fall in Four Sets

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team fell to Ferris State University today (Nov. 3) on Senior Day by scores of 25-23, 25-17, 24-26 and 26-24.

The Cardinals fell behind midway through the first two sets as the Bulldogs grabbed a big 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third game, Saginaw Valley battled the entire set and would not go away as the seniors wanted to prolong their final match inside the Cardinal Gym as long as possible. SVSU eventually won the third set 26-24.

The fourth set featured a back-and-forth battle as neither team was able to gain separation. However, it was the Bulldogs who pulled out the set and match with a 26-24 decision.

Chili's 'Player of the Match' Kate Czopek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) paced the Cardinals offensively with a team-high 17 kills and 12 digs along with four blocks.

Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich.) tallied 11 kills on 27 attacks (.333) along with five blocks.

Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) choreographed the SVSU offense with 44 assists and nine digs, including 5-for-10 on attacks in her final home contest as a Cardinal.

Senior libero Laurel Mattson (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood HS) posted a team-high 23 digs, while fellow senior Sarah Robb (Novi, Mich.) added five kills and four blocks in her last home contest.

Senior Megan Jones (Shelby, Mich. / Henry Ford II HS) recorded a career-high 13 digs on her Senior Day, while Brooke Tiller (Maumee, Ohio) added 17 digs.

The Cardinals will return to action next weekend as they hit the road for their season-ending Upper Peninsula trip against Northern Michigan on Friday (Nov. 9) and Michigan Tech on Saturday (Nov. 10).
