Cardinals Outlast Lakers in Fifth Set, 3-2

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University Cardinal volleyball team defeated Lake Superior State University tonight (Oct. 30) in five sets 25-19, 25-18, 27-29, 23-25 and 15-10.

The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 5-1 edge in the first set and maintained the lead the rest of the way for a 25-19 victory. In set two, Lake Superior ran out the early 6-1 advantage before SVSU regained momentum and cruised to a 25-18 decision for the 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was a back-and-forth battle consisting of 17 ties which the Lakers pulled out 29-27 to stay alive in the match. SVSU took a large 18-11 lead halfway through the fourth before allowing LSSU to comeback and tie up the match with a 25-23 victory.

In the deciding fifth set, the Cardinals took the lead early and never let up ultimately winning the set and the match, 15-10. SVSU used a .333 hitting percentage in the final game to put the match out of reach and complete the season sweep of LSSU.

Saginaw Valley was led by Chili's 'Player of the Match' Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich.) who recorded a season-high 18 kills on 36 attempts (.361) with seven blocks and three aces. Sophomore Kate Czopek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) posted 12 kills of her own on a season-high 58 attacks along with nine digs and five blocks in the win.

Senior libero Laurel Mattson (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood HS) finished the five-setter with a career-high 23 digs, while fellow senior Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) started the Cardinal offense with 42 assists including nine digs and eight kills.

Junior Lyndsay Reynolds (Saline, Mich.) finished with eight kills on the evening as senior Sarah Robb (Novi, Mich.) tallied six kills and six blocks at the net.

The Cardinals improve to 11-15 overall on the season and 6-8 in the GLIAC, while the Lakers move to 4-21 on the year and 1-13 in conference play.

Saginaw Valley will return to the Cardinal Gym for their final homestand of 2012 when take on Grand Valley State on Friday (Nov. 2) at 7:00 PM and No. 25 Ferris State on Saturday (Nov. 3) for Senior Day at 2:00 PM.
