Cardinals Control Fifth Set; Defeat Hawks 3-2 at Crossover

AURORA, Ill. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team defeated Quincy University 3-2 at the Day Two morning session of the 2012 GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament 25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 19-25, 15-10.

The Cardinals found themselves in an early 10-6 hole before grinding out a 25-23 first set victory. SVSU jumped out quickly in the second game as they cruised to a 25-18 victory and a 2-0 advantage in the match. The Cardinls hit .355 in the game two victory.

In the third set, Quincy took control with a 11-5 lead before pulling out the set, 25-22. A run by the Hawks gave them an 18-12 lead in the fourth which they ultimately went on to win 25-19 to even the match.

In the deciding fifth set, Saginaw Valley kept their composure and never fell behind as they used a .357 hitting percentage to take a 15-10 decision for the 3-2 victory.

The SVSU offense was led by Chili's 'Player of the Match' Lyndsay Reynolds (Saline, Mich.) who recorded a career-high 16 kills on 38 attacks with four aces.

Sophomore Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich.) posted ten kills and eight blocks, while Kate Czopek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) recorded nine digs and nine kills. Julia Thomas (Novi, Mich.) also added nine kills for Saginaw Valley.

Senior setter Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) set up the Cardinal offense to the tune of 46 assists while adding four kills, nine digs and three blocks.

Libero Brooke Tiller (Maumee, Ohio) posted a team-high 20 digs, while Megan Jones (Shelby, Mich. / Henry Ford II HS) gathered ten digs and Sarah Robb (Novi, Mich.) tacked on seven kills in the victory.

The victory moved SVSU to 9-11 overall on the season and 1-1 at the 2012 Crossover Tournament.

The Cardinals will finish up the 2012 Crossover today (Oct. 13) at 5:00 PM EST with a match against the Drury Panthers.
