Follow the 2012 GLVC/GLIAC Crossover

AURORA, Ill. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team fell to Drury University 3-2 in the final session on Day Two of the 2012 GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament 25-20, 25-22, 16-25, 19-25, 15-7.

The Panthers took the lead midway through the first set and came away with the 25-20 victory for the early 1-0 edge. Drury managed to pull out a tightly contested second set 25-22 before the Cardinals ran away with the third set, 25-16 to stay alive in the match. Saginaw Valley hit .458 in the third set to get back in the match.

In the fourth set, Saginaw Valley gained the early advantage and increased their lead throughout the set, coming away with a 25-19 victory to knot up the contest and force their second fifth set match of the day. SVSU used a .536 hitting performance in the fourth to dominate the set and force a fifth game.

The Panthers managed to fend off the Cardinal comeback as they prevailed in the fifth set, 15-7.

The SVSU offense was led by Chili's 'Player of the Match' Kate Czopek(Sterling Heights, Mich.) recorded a career-high 14 kills and 12 digs. 

Julia Thomas (Novi, Mich.) also added nine kills for Saginaw Valley, while Lyndsay Reynolds (Saline, Mich.) posted eight kills and seven aces.

Senior setter Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) set up the Cardinal offense to the tune of 40 assists while adding six kills, 12 digs and three blocks.

The loss moved SVSU to 9-12 overall on the season and 1-2 at the 2012 Crossover Tournament. The Cardinals are 9-6 overall in five years of Crossover play.

The Cardinals will return to action next weekend when they play host to Malone on Friday (Oct. 19 - 7:00 PM) and Walsh on Saturday (Oct. 20 - 2:00 PM).
