Cardinals Rebound From Slow Start; Slay Dragons 3-1

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team defeated Tiffin University 3-1 today (Oct. 6) by scores of 21-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-21.

Tiffin came out with a blistering attack hitting .362 in the first set for the 25-21 victory. The Cardinals rebounded in the second as they took the lead early resulting in a 25-19 win to tie the match at 1-1.

In the third game, SVSU used a 6-1 run midway through the set to gain momentum and take a 2-1 edge in the match after a 25-15 decision. The Cardinals closed out the Dragons in the fourth set with a 25-21 victory thanks to a surge midway through the set.

The Cardinal offense was led by Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich.) who posted a team and career-high 17 kills on 42 attacks (.333) with four blocks. Chili's 'Player of the Match' junior Julia Thomas (Novi, Mich.) also recorded a career-high 11 kills on 25 attacks (.360) with 14 digs, giving her double-digit kills in consecutive games. 

Ashley Driscoll (Bellevue, Mich. / Kellogg CC) and Cyndi Wagner (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Lahser HS) connected on nine kills each, while Morgan Eddy (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich HS) tacked on seven kills on 16 attacks (.375).

Brooke Tiller (Maumee, Ohio) added 17 digs at the libero position along with Laurel Mattson (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood HS) who gathered 11 digs in the victory.

Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) orchestrated the Saginaw Valley attack with 43 assists as well as 11 digs.

The victory moves SVSU to 8-10 on the season and 4-5 in the GLIAC, while the Dragons fall to 5-10 on the year and 1-8 in the GLIAC.

The Cardinals will be back in action next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 12-13) in Aurora, Ill. at the 2012 GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament.  Opponents and match times will announced on Sunday night.
