Cardinals Fall to Eagles, 3-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team lost to Ashland University today (Sept. 29) in three sets 25-21, 25-21 and 25-23. The loss drops the Cardinals to 7-9 on the year overall and 3-4 in the GLIAC, while the Eagles improve to 12-2 on the season and 5-1 in the conference.

The contest was all knotted up at 20-20 in the first set before the Eagles went on a run to close out the game 25-21 for the early edge. In the second game, the Cardinals found themselves in a 24-15 hole before winning the next six points. However, Ashland closed out the set 25-21 to go up 2-0 in the match.

Saginaw Valley held the momentum for most of the third set before Ashland made some key plays at the end to pull out a 25-23 decision for the 3-0 match victory.

SVSU was led by Chili's 'Player of the Match' sophomore Kate Czopek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) who recorded a team-high ten kills with 28 attacks and nine digs. Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich.) chipped in seven kills and two aces, while Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) posted 24 assists and five kills on ten attacks.

Morgan Eddy (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich HS) managed six kills on just eight attempts (.625) as the freshman Cardinal libero Brooke Tiller (Maumee, Ohio) tallied ten digs on the afternoon.

The Cardinals will return to action on Friday (Oct. 5) when they visit Ohio Dominican for a 7:00 PM start.
