Lady Cardinals Sweep Storm, 3-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball program defeated the Lake Erie College Storm tonight (Sept. 28) in straight sets 25-13, 25-13 and 25-16. The victory improves the Cardinals' record to 7-8 overall on the season and 3-3 in the GLIAC, while Lake Erie drops to 2-9 on the year and 0-6 in the conference.

The Cardinals started off the match with their offense clicking as they pulled away with big victories in the first two sets by identical 25-13 decisions. Saginaw Valley hit .303 in the second set as they combined for 14 kills and just four miscues. 

The Cardinals took control early in the third game jumping out to a 12-4 advantage before closing out the Storm, 25-16.

Kate Czopek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) led the Cardinal offense with 12 kills on 30 attack attempts, which were both team-highs. Sophomore setter Andrea Meram (ashington Twp., Mich. / Romeo HS) orchestrated the SVSU attack with 33 assists along with three service aces, while Laurel Mattson (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood HS) collected 20 digs. 

Chili's 'Player of the Match' Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich. / Gabriel Richard HS) and Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich.) each added eight kills each in the sweep over Lake Erie. Ferla was successful on eight of ten attack attempts for an .800 hitting percentage.

Saginaw Valley had 11 service aces on the evening and hit .267 for the match.

The Cardinals will return to action tomorrow (Sept. 29) when they host Ashland University for a 2:00 PM start.
