Saginaw Valley Downs Lake Superior in Four Sets, 3-1

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University Cardinal volleyball team defeated Lake Superior State University tonight (Sept. 25) in four sets 25-17, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-17. The Cardinals improve to 6-8 overall on the season and 2-3 in the GLIAC, while the Lakers move to 3-10 on the year and 0-5 in conference play.

The Cardinals jumped out to an 18-11 first set advantage and cruised to a 25-17 victory and the early 1-0 edge. In set two, Lake Superior tied the match after going on a run midway through the game to take the lead and the set 25-20.

Saginaw Valley then won a closely contested third set (25-21) before putting the Lakers away in the fourth with a .344 hitting performance (15-of-23) and the 25-17 decision.

Saginaw Valley was led by Chili's 'Player of the Match' Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) who started the Cardinal offense with 42 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich. / Gabriel Richard HS) tacked on a team-high 16 kills and 20 digs as her fellow sophomore teammate Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich.) connected on 13 of her 24 total attacks (.375) along with eight total blocks.

Lyndsay Reynolds (Saline, Mich.) recorded a season-high 11 kills on the evening, while Brooke Tiller (Maumee, Ohio) also gathered up a season-high 21 digs.

Saginaw Valley will return to action at the Cardinal Gym again this Friday (Sept. 28) as they battle Lake Erie College for a 7:00 PM start.
