DETROIT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team fell on the road against conference leading Wayne State University tonight (Sept. 21), 3-2. The Cardinals fall to 5-6 overall on the year and 1-2 in the GLIAC, while the Warriors move to 9-3 overall and 4-0 atop the conference standings.

Both teams battled back-and-forth in a tight first set which featured double-digit errors from both squads. The set was tied at 19-19 before Wayne State went on a run for the 25-20 victory. SVSU bounced back in the second set pulling away late for the 25-20 victory to square the match.

Wayne State jumped out to a big lead in the third and took the game by a 25-11 score for the 2-1 lead. The Cardinals continued the see-saw affair in the fourth as they took a commanding 25-16 victory to send the match to a decisive fifth set.

SVSU found themselves down early in the fifth set before battling back to within two, 13-11. However, Wayne State won the final two points to take the set and the match with a 15-11 decision.

The Cardinals were led offensively by Chili's 'Player of the Match' Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich.) who recorded a team-high 12 kills with a .310 hitting percentage, including a career-high eight blocks.

Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich. / Gabriel Richard HS) also keyed the Saginaw Valley attack to the tune of 11 kills on 37 attacks with seven digs and two aces.

Junior Lyndsay Reynolds (Saline, Mich.) finished with eight kills, while Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) set up 33 total Cardinal kills on the evening.

Freshman libero Brooke Tiller (Maumee, Ohio) gathered 15 digs in the match, while senior defensive specialist Laurel Mattson (Lake Odessa, Mich. / Lakewood HS) posted ten digs. Kate Czopek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) also recorded four kills, three aces and five blocks in the five setter.

Saginaw Valley will return to the court as they travel to Findlay to battle the Oilers tomorrow (Sept. 22) for a 2:00 PM start.
