SVSU Defeats Michigan Tech, 3-1

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team defeated the Michigan Tech University Huskies this afternoon (Sept. 15) by a score of 3-1 to notch its first victory of the 2012 season in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Cardinals would jump out of the gate with a 25-18 victory in the first set and would take a 2-0 lead after posting a 25-20 advantage in the second frame.  Michigan Tech would cut into that deficit, however, as the Huskies landed a 27-25 win in the third set.  SVSU would ensue to close the match out, claiming a 25-21 victory in the fourth and final set.

Chili's "Player of the Match" Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich.) led the Cardinals offensively with 16 kills while hitting at a .462 clip.  She also had a team-high four blocks on the defensive end.  Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) was the only other SVSU player to reach double-digit figures in kills, posting 10 in the contest.  Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) had a match-high 38 assists while adding 10 digs.  Laurel Mattson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood HS) recorded a team-high 13 digs and Brooke Tiller (Maumee, Ohio) chipped-in with 10.

SVSU improves to 5-6 overall on the season and an even 1-1 in GLIAC play while Michigan Tech falls to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Sept. 21, when they travel to play at Wayne State University for another GLIAC contest.
