Cardinals Sweep Lakers in  GLIAC Quarterfinals

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team were victorious in their GLIAC Quarterfinal match over Grand Valley State University today (11/10), 3-0. The Cardinals advance to the GLIAC Semi-finals to battle Hillsdale College on Saturday at Ferris State University.

The Cardinals jumped out to a fast start against their rival Lakers and a 17-11 advantage before closing out the set with an impressive 25-17 victory in which they hit .367 as a team.

In the second set, the Cardinals prevailed in a back-and-forth battle 25-21 to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Grand Valley took the early lead in the third game, but Saginaw Valley managed to tie it up at 12-12. The aggressive play continued and the set was tied up at 21-21. Saginaw Valley closed out the sweep over the Lakers with a thrilling 26-24 win in front of a capacity Cardinal Gym.

The Cardinals were led by senior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) who earned Chili's "Player of the Match" honors with a match-high 21 kills, giving her the all-time SVSU record for kills, along with a .457 hitting percentage. Buxton also had 11 digs on the evening. Senior Becky Schroeder (Owosso, Mich./Northwood University) posted seven kills, while junior Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) finished the match with 36 assists and five digs. Senior libero Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) finished with a team-high 15 digs in the victory. Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) also recorded six kills and five blocks on the evening.

With the victory the Cardinals advance to the GLIAC Semifinals to battle the No. 2 seed Hillsdale Chargers on Saturday at Ferris State University. Match time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
