Cardinals Sweep Dragons, 3-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team defeated the Tiffin University Dragons today (10/28), 3-1. The Cardinals improve to 14-8 on the season and 12-3 in the GLIAC, while Tiffin falls to 4-10 in the conference and 5-18 overall with the defeat.

The Cardinals ran out to a quick 5-0 lead to start the match, but the Dragons fought back to tie up the first game 13-13. Tiffin would take a 23-17 lead before the Cardinals ran off six points in a row to finish out the set with an 11-3 run to win the first game 28-26.

Saginaw Valley again jumped out quickly in the second game and took an early 10-4 advantage before fighting off a Tiffin rally to win 25-20 and go up 2-0 in the match. The Cardinals continued their quality play by taking a 15-8 lead midway through the third set. SVSU used a .423 hitting percentage in the third set to finish off the match with a 25-14 victory to sweep the Dragons.

The Cardinals were led by freshman Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) who earned "Chili's Player of the Match" with 12 kills and a .478 hitting percentage. Senior Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) recorded 10 kills including a .455 hitting percentage and three service aces, while fellow senior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) posted a match-high 14 kills. Senior libero Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) recorded a match-high 17 digs in the sweep, while junior Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) finished the match with a match-high 38 assists. Junior Julia Thomas (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) added ten digs in the victory for the Cardinals.

Saginaw Valley will attempt to extend their four-game win streak as they travel to Columbus to take on Ohio Dominican on Sunday (10/30) for a 2:00 pm contest.
