Cardinals Deny Tritons 3-1 at Crossover

AURORA, Ill. -- The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team defeated the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons today (10/14), 3-1, in the morning session of Day One at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament. The Cardinals improve to 10-6 on the season while the Tritons fall to 12-7.

The Cardinals jumped out to a quick lead in the first game and pulled away quickly, winning 25-10. The Tritons bounced back in the second with a 25-19 victory in the second set to tie up the match. Saginaw Valley answered back in the third with a convincing 25-16 win to go up 2-1. In the fourth game, the Cardinals found themselves in an early 8-2 hole, but battled back to win the set and the match 25-23.

The Cardinals were led by senior Becky Schroeder (Owosso, Mich./Northwood University) who earned Chili's "Player of the Match" honors with a match-high 14 kills, including a stellar .619 hitting percentage. Fellow senior senior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) also recorded 14 kills and added six digs for a .290 hitting percentage. Junior Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) tallied a match-high 35 assists while senior libero Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) posted a match-high 12 digs in the victory. Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) also added seven kills on the afternoon.

Saginaw Valley will attempt to increase their win-streak to four as they continue the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament Friday (10/14) afternoon at 5:30 pm against Southern Indiana.
