Saginaw Valley Sweeps Ashland, 3-0

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team finished off their victorious Ohio road trip by defeating the Ashland University Eagles on Sunday (10/9), 3-0. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 9-6 on the season and 8-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Eagles drop to 9-6 overall and 7-4 in the conference.

The Cardinals jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, taking the first game 25-20. Saginaw Valley found themselves down 11-2 early in the set, but went on a big run to win 25-23. In the third game, the Cardinals came out determined and went on an 8-1 run to start the set. SVSU increased their lead to 20-9 ultimately closing out the match with a 25-17 victory.

The Cardinals were lead by senior Becky Schroeder (Owosso, Mich./Northwood University) who earned Chili's "Player of the Match" honors with 11 kills on 19 attacks, resulting in a .421 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) recorded 11 kills, 11 digs and three services aces on the afternoon, while setter Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) posted a match-high 35 assists. Senior Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) and freshman Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) each added nine kills in the victory for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals look to take their momentum to the 2011 Mizuno GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Volleyball Tournament at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. starting on Friday (10/14) and finishing up on Saturday (10/15). The times of the matches are to be determined.
