Cardinals Defeat Storm, 3-0

PAINSVILLE, Ohio -- The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team got back on track today (10/8) with a victory over the Lake Erie College Storm, 3-0. The Cardinals improve to 8-6 overall and 7-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Storm falls to 2-10 overall and 1-9 in the conference.

The Lady Cardinals got out to a quick start winning the first game 25-20. Saginaw Valley battled tough in the second game and pulled away late to win 25-19. The Cardinals stayed aggressive in the third and jumped out to a 17-10 lead, ultimately taking the game and the match, 25-18.

The Cardinals were lead by senior Jessica Hass (Alanson, Mich./Harbor Light Christian Acadamy) who earned Chili's "Player of the Match" honors with eight kills on 11 attacks, resulting in a .727 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) recorded a team-high 11 kills and four services aces on the afternoon, while Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) had a team-high 14 digs. Setters Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) and Andrea Meram (Washington Twp., Mich./Romeo HS) recorded 20 and 12 assists, respectively.

Saginaw Valley recorded kills from 11 different players in the victory. The Cardinals currently sit in third place in the GLIAC North, behind Ferris State and Northern Michigan.

The Cardinals look to start a winning streak as they travel to Ashland tomorrow (Sunday) for a 2:00 pm contest.
