Cardinals Fall to Oilers, 3-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team was defeated by the University of Findlay today (9/25), 3-0.  With the defeat the Cardinals fall to 6-5 overall on the season and 5-2 in the GLIAC, while the Oilers improve to 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the conference.

The Cardinals got off to a slow start Sunday afternoon as the Oilers took the first set 25-18. Findlay would continue their aggressive play by winning the second set 25-19. The Cardinals struggled to gain momentum in the third set as the Oilers won the match with a 25-16 count.

The Cardinals were led by junior Laurel Mattson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood HS) who earned Chili's "Player of the Match" honors with ten digs and the lone service ace for SVSU. Senior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) recorded a team-high 10 kills, while Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) added eight blocks in the match. Junior Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) tallied 13 assists, while Andrea Meram (Novi, Mich.) added seven assists on the afternoon. Libero Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) recorded a match-high 11 digs in the defeat.

Saginaw Valley will attempt to bounce back Friday (9/30) when they travel to Grand Valley State for a 7:00 pm match-up.
