Cardinals Defeat Lakers, Stay Unbeaten in GLIAC, 3-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team finished off its season-opening homestand by defeating the Lake Superior State University Lakers on Sunday afternoon (9/18) by a score of 3-0.  The victory improves the Cardinals' record to 5-3 overall on the season and 4-0 in the GLIAC while the Lakers fall to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

The Cardinals got out to a quick start leading 16-10 in the first set but had to hold on late to take win, 26-24. Saginaw Valley continued their aggressive play the remainder of the match and took the second and third sets, 25-21 and 25-19, respectively.

Junior Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) earned Chili's "Player of the Match" honors with a match-high 32 assists, seven kills, five digs and a hitting percentage of .308 in the contest. Senior Becky Schroeder (Owosso, Mich./Northwood University) posted 11 kills along with a .611 hitting percentage, while Annie Buxton talled a match-high 12 kills in the victory. Libero Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) recorded a match-high 18 digs, while Laurel Mattson added three service aces and seven digs on the evening.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday (9/23) when they host the Hillsdale Chargers for a 7:00 pm match-up.
