Cardinals Finish Off Huskies, 3-2

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team finished off their Upper Peninsula road trip with a 3-2 victory over the Michigan Tech Huskies. The victory moves the Cardinals to 3-3 overall on the season and 2-0 in the GLIAC, while Michigan Tech drops to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Saginaw Valley jumped out to a quick start, winning a closely contested first set 26-24. Michigan Tech grabbed the second set 27-25, which consisted of 15 total ties. The Cardinals then used 12 kills and three blocks to win the third set 25-17. The Huskies continued the back and forth battle by taking the fourth set 25-19. In the fifth and final set, the Cardinals took the lead early and ultimately won by the score of 15-11.

Senior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) earned Chili's "Player of the Match" honors leading the Cardinals with a match-high 22 kills, 22 digs, three service aces and two blocks. Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) recorded a match-high 24 digs and eight assists, while Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) talllied ten kills, six digs and four service aces on the evening. Junior Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) had 45 assists and six digs, including five kills on seven total attacks.

The Cardinals will return to SVSU on Friday (9/16) for their home opener with a match against the Northwood Timberwolves. The contest is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
