Cardinals Fall on Final Day of Indy Invite

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team lost their final two matches at the 2011 University of Indianapolis Invitational on Sunday (9/4).  The Cardinals fell to No. 14-ranked Indianapolis by a 3-2 count and also to Northern Kentucky in straight sets, 3-0. Saginaw Valley falls to 1-3 on the season, while Indianapolis improves to 1-3 and Northern Kentucky goes to 4-0.

The first match saw Indianapolis win the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-14. Saginaw Valley won the next two sets, 25-23 and 25-18 before falling in the decisive fifth set, 15-11.

Senior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) led the Cardinals offensive attack with 18 kills and nine digs. Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) recorded 11 kills and two service aces. Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) had a team-high 33 assists. Freshman Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) had ten kills.

In the second match, the Cardinals ran into a tough Northern Kentucky squad losing in three sets, 25-12, 25-17 and 25-17.

Breault led the Cardinals with 18 assists and five digs while Annie Buxton recorded a team-high eight kills. Freshman Kate Czopek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) tallied four blocks and senior Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) added seven digs. Northern Kentucky recorded a .361 hitting percentage in the contest.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Sept. 9, when they travel to Northern Michigan University to kickoff the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule. Game time is set for 7 pm.
