Cardinals Defeat Pumas, 3-1

AURORA, Ill. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team defeated the St. Joseph's College Pumas by a score of 3-1 in the Cardinals' first match of the 2010 GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament in Aurora, Ill.  The victory evens SVSU's record at 8-8 overall on the season while the Pumas drop to 9-10 overall.

St. Joe's took the first set by a score of 25-19.  SVSU won the second frame 25-22 and claimed the last two by scores of 25-15 and 25-23, respectively.

Junior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) led the offensive attack while earning Chili's "Player of the Match" honors, hitting .316 while posting a match-high 15 kills.  Junior Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) also reached double-figures in kills, recording 10 to go along with seven blocks.  Junior Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) had a match-high 14 digs on the defensive end.  Sophomore Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) had 35 assists for the Cardinals, who hit .264 overall on the afternoon. 

The Cardinals continue play in the tournament tomorrow, as they face Illinois-Springfield at 10:00 am before taking-on Drury at 4:00 pm to round-out play for the weekend.  The GLIAC is ahead in the tournament by a count of 12-11 overall.
