Volleyball Rounds-out Weekend With 3-2 Victory At Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team picked-up its second win of the weekend, defeating rival Northwood University, 3-2 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match-up.  With the victory, the Cardinals move to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC while the Timberwolves fall to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in league play.

SVSU took the first set by a score of 28-26.  Northwood bounced-back for victories in sets two and three by scores of 25-15 and 25-13, respectively.  The Cardinals evened things up at two sets apiece after taking the fourth frame, 25-21.  The match would remain tight until the end, as Saginaw Valley squeaked-out a 16-14 victory in the fifth and final set to claim the league tilt.

Junior Becky Schroeder (Owosso, Mich.) led the Cardinals on the afternoon, posting a team-high .238 attack percentage, including nine kills while adding nine blocks on the defensive end to earn Chili's "Player of the Match" honors.  Junior Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) had a match-high 18 kills for SVSU and added 14 digs to help anchor the Cardinal defense.  Junior Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) also reached double-digit figures in kills, recording 13 against the T-Wolves.  Junior Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) had a match-high 23 digs for Saginaw Valley.  Sophomore Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) had a career-high 53 assists in the match.

The Cardinals will be back in action again on Friday, Sep. 24, as they travel to play a 7:00 pm match at Wayne State University before playing at the University of Findlay on Saturday (9/25) in a 4:00 pm match-up and at Hillsdale College on Sunday (9/26) at 2:00 pm in a re-match of last year's GLIAC Championship Match.
