UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team lost a 3-2 GLIAC contest to the visiting Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday (9/11). The loss evens the Cardinals' record at 3-3 overall on the season and 1-1 in the GLIAC while the Wildcats improve to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Wildcats came out to claim the first set by a score of 25-19. SVSU would answer back with a 25-17 advantage in set number two. Northern claimed the third set by a score of 26-24 before the Cards bounced-back to take the fourth set by a count of 25-20. The Wildcats closed-out the match with a 15-13 victory in the fifth and final set.
The Cardinals were led by Chili's "Player of the Match" Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS), who had another good night, hitting .333 with seven kills while adding five blocks on the defensive end. Becky Schroeder (Owosso, Mich.) had a great effort for the Cards as well, hitting at a .556 clip with five kills and four blocks defensively. Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) had 12 kills and 10 digs for SVSU. Jessica Treiber (Sebewaing, Mich./USA HS) had 13 kills and three blocks. Laura Ward (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) had a game-high 19 digs for the Cardinals and Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) had 37 assists on the afternoon.
SVSU is back in action Friday (9/17), when it travels to Lake Superior State for a 7:00 pm match-up. SVSU won both meetings last year between the two schools.
