DETROIT – The Saginaw Valley State
University volleyball team won in nail-biter fashion Friday night
against Wayne State University in a match that went five games,
26-24, 19-25, 21-25, 25-21 and 16-14.
Leading the way for the Cardinals on offense were freshman middle
hitter Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora HS) and junior middle
hitter Jaclyn Carnago (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair HS) who each
accumulated 12 kills, while middle hitter freshman Katie Fitzgerald
(Whitby, Ont./Sinclair SS) followed closely with 11 kills, while
hitting .474 overall. On defense, the Cardinals were led by senior
outside hitter, Sarah Redoute (Clinton Township, Mich./L’Anse
Creuse HS), and senior Carmen Schacher (Flint, Mich./Keasley HS)
who amassed 13 digs in the match.
After SVSU beat Wayne State in the first game, the Warriors proved
they were here to play by winning the next two games, and pushing
the Cardinals closer to their third loss in as many games.
But, the Cardinals bounced back by winning the fourth game to lock
the match at two games apiece, and pushed the contest to a fifth,
and final, game.
SVSU came out on top in the last game 16-14, sneaking out the
victory.
The Cardinals (13-3 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) look to take the momentum
into their next match at 4 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 4) at Northwood
University.
