UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw
Valley State University volleyball team won a five-game nail-biter
against visiting GLIAC foe Michigan Tech. tonight (Oct. 24) 25-21,
18-25, 25-18, 18-25 and 16-14 in Cardinal Gym.
The story of the match was the Cardinal defense, which as a team
accumulated 72 digs over the five games. The defense came through
in the clutch when SVSU had their backs to the wall in game five,
but managed to battle their way back to win the game 16-14. Senior
Carmen Schacher (Flint, Mich. Kearsley HS) gathered 21 digs to lead
SVSU, and senior Sarah Redoute amassed 17 digs.
On offense, the Cardinals were lead by Redoute (Clinton Township,
Mich./ L’Anse Creuse HS), who had a double-double with 12
kills to accompany her 17 digs, and sophomore Jessica Treiber
(Unionville, Mich./Unionville-Sebewaing HS) also had a dozen kills,
while junior Jaclyn Carnago (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair HS) also
collected 12 kills. As a team, the Cardinals had 56 kills on the
night.
The win moves the Cardinals to 18-5 overall, and 8-4 in the GLIAC,
while Michigan Tech falls to 15-8 overall and 9-3 in the GLIAC.
Saginaw Valley returns to action at 4 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 25) when
they face Northern Michigan University. Before the game, the
Cardinals will collect donations for Dig for the Cure, a non-profit
organization to fund breast cancer treatment research.
