12 Cardinals Earn USTFCCCA All-Region Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Saginaw Valley State University track and field teams had 12 athletes, three males and nine females, earn U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II All-Region awards for the 2013 outdoor season.  The top five athletes from each region in individual events and each member of a relay ranked in the region's top three have earned the All-Region distinction for this season.

Women
Nine female athletes also received All-Region honors this year including three student-athletes that earned All-Region honors in multiple events.   

The 4x100 meter relay team of Kim Balls (Bridgeport, Mich.), Yanisha Edwards (Flint, Mich. / Northwestern HS), Shavonne Roberson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Diamond Taylor (Southfield, Mich.) earned their honors with a time of 47.17 at the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invitational in mid-April.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Ola Hendler (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge HS), Taylor Stepanski (Alpena, Mich.), Diamond Taylor and Shavonne Roberson received All-Region accolades with their record-breaking performance at the Hillsdale Classic by taking first place with a time of 3:45.58.  

Diamond Taylor, who was a member of both relay teams, also earned individual honors in the 400 meter run with her performance at the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invitational with a time of 56.27.  

Taylor Stepanski also earned individual honors for the Cardinals with her first place finish in the 800 meter run at the GLIAC Championships.  She crossed the line with a time of 2:10.27.

Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich.) received her honors in the steeplechase with a school-record time of 10:50.69 at the 55th Mt. Sac Relays in April.

Emily Short (Tawas, Mich.) added her All-Region laurels in the 5000 meter run with a school-record time of 16:49.11 at the 55th Mt. Sac Relays.

Ashley Meyer's (Shepherd, Mich.) strong performance in the GVSU vs. SVSU meet in March helped her garner All-Region honors as she crossed the line with a time of 4:32.93 in the 3000 meter run. 

Men
The three male athletes that garnered All-Region honors were seniors Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich.) and David Ray (Lansing, Mich. / Eastern HS) and junior Frank Sanders (Detroit, Mich./Sterling Heights HS).

Tyler Grob headlines the SVSU men's lineup after he earned an NCAA Division II Automatic Qualifying mark for nationals in the decathlon with a total score of 7,024 points. Grob's total broke both the GLIAC and SVSU records and finished fifth best in the country.

David Ray garnered All-Region honors in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.30 at the Hillsdale Classic.  

Frank Sanders received All-Region honors with a height of 2.09 meters in the high jump at the 2013 GLIAC Outdoor Championships.
