Cardinals Compete at Bryan Clay Invite in California, Notch Two Provo Marks

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams competed at the 2013 Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University today (April 19) in Whittier, Calif.

Women

Emerald Joiner (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill) led the SVSU women with their only NCAA DII Qualifying mark of the day. Joiner recorded a distance of 44-feet-2 1/2 inches in the shot put competition to move to 24th on the national list of provo qualifiers.

The SVSU women's 4x100 meter relay consisting of Shavonne Roberson (Ypsilanti, Mich.), Yanisha Edwards (Flint, Mich. / Northwestern), Kim Balls (Bridgeport, Mich.) and Diamond Taylor (Southfield, Mich.) posted a first place finish in their section with a mark of 47.17 seconds.

Yanisha Edwards went on to finish in first place in the fourth heat of the 200 meter with a time of 25.08 seconds, while Diamond Taylor also earned a third place finish in the 400 meter dash crossing the line in 56.27 seconds. 

The 4x400 meter relay squad compiled of Diamond Taylor, Taylor Stepanski (Alpena, Mich.) Ola Hendler (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge) and Shavonne Roberson garnered third place honors with a time of 3:53.52. 

Men

Gareth Gose (Leslie, Mich.) recorded a runner-up finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase competition with a time of 9:30.10. Drew Meylan (Bay City, Mich. / Western) also earned runner-up honors in his section of the men's 1500 meter run. 

Senior David Ray (Lansing, Mich. / Eastern) notched an NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying time of 14.31 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles to finish in fourth place. 

Joey Burelle (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) completed the 5000 meter distance competition with in second place after completing the race with at time of 15:13.17.

Travis Toye (Davison, Mich.) posted a fourth place finish in the third heat of the 800 meter, while Josh Arnold (Clio, Mich.) finished runner-up in the fourth heat.

The SVSU track and field student-athletes will finish up their time in California tomorrow (April 20) at the final day of the Mt. SAC Relays.
