Cardinal Women Perform Well at Northwood Open

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University track team had a great showing in the Northwood Open (Apr. 16 – Apr. 19).


The men had a great showing in the event as they swept the top three places of the 1500 meter run. Senior Len Weddel (East Tawas, Mich.) took first place with a final time of 3:58.22, sophomore Derek Welmers (Standish, Mich.) finished second at 4:01.17 and junior Benjamin Richards (Goodrich, Mich.) took third place with a final time of 4:01.23. Senior Sam Tilmon (Romulus, Mich.) took first place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.18 while junior Brock Humphries (Shelby Twp., Mich.) took fourth at 15.87.

Junior Jesse Evans (Cheboygan, Mich.) took first place in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:29.21. Junior Scott Chevalier (Ann Arbor, Mich.) had a solid performance on the event as he took second place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.99 and third place overall with a time of 10.80. Chevalier would also team with Tilmon, Benjamin and junior Ryan Irwin (Harbor Beach, Mich.) to take a fourth place finish in the 4x100 relay.

Junior Anthony Filipek (Caro, Mich.) had a fourth place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:52.61. Senior Joe Dugall (Clinton Twp., Mich.) finished third place in the high jump with a height of 2.00 meters while senior Sean LaPine (Harbor Beach, Mich.) took second in the pole vault event with a height of 4.65 meters, Benjamin finished fourth at 4.10 meters and junior Luke Dinnan (Midland, Mich.) took fifth at 4.10 meters.

Junior Josh Koglin (Kimball, Mich.) had a first place finish in the hammer throw with a distance of 58.17 meters while sophomore teammate Brian Bott (Buckley, Mich.) took third at 44.67 meters. Senior Sean Egan (Marysville, Mich.) took second place in the shot put with a distance of 15.07 meters while Koglin took fourth at 14.34 meters. Junior Ryan Simmons (Port Austin, Mich.) took third place in the javelin throw with a distance of 47.37 meters while freshman Ryan Jayne (East Lansing, Mich.) finished fifth place overall in the triple jump with a height of 13.24 meters. Junior Mark Badowsky (Lincoln Park, Mich.) finished second place overall in the men’s decathalon event with a final total of 5703 points while sophomore teammate Aaron Wilkins (Schoolcraft, Mich.) finished fourth with 5123 points.

For the women, the 4x400 meter relay team of freshman sophomore Sjonne Mitchell (Clarkston, Mich.), freshman Kelsey Bartoloni (Southgate, Mich.), freshman Angela Brooks (Ortonville, Mich.) and sophomore Alycia Wright (Macomb, Mich.) took first place with a final time of 4:07.40. The 4x100 meter relay team of Brooks, Bartoloni, Mitchell and freshman Samantha Roberts (Bullock Creek, Mich.) took third place overall with a time of 50:05. Mitchell would also take third place overall in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.21 while Roberts toook second place in the 100 meter hurdles at 15:61 and third place in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.64. Wright would also take third place in the 800 meter run with a final time of 2:22.75. Freshman Chelsea Savage (Monroe, Mich.) finished third place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:41.98.

Sophomore Stacey Westphal (Corunna, Mich.) took first place in the pole vault event with a height of 3.50 meters while sophomore Kelly Henris (Saginaw, Mich.) took third with a height of 3.05 meters. Junior Emily Nugent (Benzoniz, Mich.) had a great showing at the event, finishing second in the hammer throw with a distance of 48.36 meters, third in the shot put with a distance of 12.00 meters and fifth in the discus throw with a distance of 38.32 meters. Senior Christina Ferguson (Athens, Ont.) finished in thrid place in the triple jump event with a distance of 10.15 meters while senior Megan Haskin (Fairview, Mich.) took fifth place in the javelin throw with a distance of 33.75 meters.

The Cardinal track teams are back in action as they travel to Hillsdale, Mich. (Apr. 30) to compete in the GLIAC Outdoor Championships scheduled at 4:00 PM.
