SVSU has Good Showing at GVSU Early Bird

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men and women’s track teams performed well today (Jan. 9) at the Grand Valley State University’s Early Bird meet.

For the men, junior Scott Chevalier (Ann Arbor, Mich.) claimed first place in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.98. Sophomore Dennis Jackson (Sterling Heights, Mich.) came in fourth at 7.22. Chevalier finished fourth, and senior Sam Tilmon (Romulus, Mich.) finsihed in fifth place with times of 23:24 and 23:39, respectively in the 200 meter dash. Senior Charlie Richards (Goodrich, Mich.) finished in the top spot in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:54.52. Junior Jesse Evans (Cheboygan, Mich.) claimed second place in the one-mile run with a time of 4:26.39. Junior Derek Stone (Metamora, Mich.) came in fifth place in the 3,000 meter run. In the 60 meter hurdles, Tilmon claimed second place in 8:38. In the high jump, senior Elarto Hooper (Ypsilanti, Mich.) jumped his way to second place with jumps of 2.03 meters and 1.97 meters. Senior Sean Lapan (Harbor Beach, Mich.) pole vaulted his way to fifth place clearing 4.12 meters and 4.45 meters in the pole vault. In the shot put, Sean Egan (Marysville, Mich.) threw his way to second place with throws of 16.22 meters and 15.39 meters. Junior Josh Kroglin (Kimball, Mich.) claimed fourth place in the weight throw with 17.02 meters and 16.18 meters. Senior Kyle McDaniel (Yale, Mich.) claimed second place, and junior Mark Badowsky (Lincoln Park, Mich.) came in third place in the heptathlon.

On the women’s side, senior Ashley Morrow (Millington, Mich.) took first place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.50, followed by second place freshman Angela Brooks (Ortonville, Mich.) at 1:00.52 and third place freshman Sarah Kawiecki (Saginaw, Mich.) at 1:02.49. In the 800 meter run, sophomore Cheryle Mapes (Sanford, Mich.) took the top spot in 2:30, followed by junior Maggie Stalker (Oscoda, Mich.)in second place at 2:28.13. In the one-mile run, Stalker finished in second place in 5:19.70. SVSU finished in second place in the 4-by-400 meter relay with a time of 4:08.25. Junior Emily Nugent (Benzonia, Mich.) finished in fourth place in the shot put with a distance of 12.38 meters, and in third place in the weight throw with a distance of 15.98 meters. And senior Leighann Dowell (Millington, Mich.) finished in second place in the indoor pentathlon.

Both track teams will return to action at 3 p.m. Jan. 16 when they host the SVSU Collegiate Open in the Ryder Center.
