Cardinal Women Have Good Showing at DII Challenge

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s and women’s track teams ran well today (Feb. 7) at Grand Valley State’s Division II Challenge.

For the men, Senior Charlie Richards (Goodrich, Mich.) finished first place in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:53.66, while junior teammate Anthony Filipek (Caro, Mich./Kingston) placed third with a final time of 1:53.85. Junior Steve Genther (Laingsburg, Mich.) took the first place position in the 5000 meter run finishing at a time of 14:56.56 while Junior Jesse Evans (Cheboygan, Mich.) finished right behind in second place with a time of 14:57.23.

Senior Sam Tilmon (Romulus, Mich.) had a great showing in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing first with a time of 8:18. The Cardinals also took first place in the high jump as Senior Elatro Hooper (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) finished with a height of 2.09 meters. Junior Scott Chevalier (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) took third place in the 60 meter dash, finishing at a time of 7:01.

On the women’s side, the relay team of senior Sjonne Mitchell (Clarkston, Mich./Troy), senior Ashley Morrow (Millington, Mich.), freshman Sarah Kawiecki (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) and freshman Angela Brooks (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon HS) took third place in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:01.04. Junior Amber Catlin (Alma, Mich.) finished fourth place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:28.69.

Both men’s and women’s track teams will return to action as they travel to Allendale, Mich. to participate in the Grand Valley State University Big Meet (Feb. 14) at 10:00 am.
