Three Women's Tennis Student-Athletes earn All-GLIAC accolades

MIDLAND -- Two Saginaw Valley State University Women's Tennis student-athletes have been named to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Second Team following their performances during the 2019 fall season for the Cardinals. 

Senior Maddie Miller (Brighton, Mich.) and junior Joanne Gao (Novi, Mich.) were both named to the All-GLIAC Second Team in the league's annual postseason awards ceremony on Friday (Oct. 25) at the Great Midland Tennis Center. Sophomore Nicole Johnson was named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention squad for Saginaw Valley as well. 

Miller competed at the No. 1 Doubles and No. 1 Singles positions throughout her senior season, posting a 4-5 record in singles action and a 2-7 mark in doubles play alongside teammate Taylor McLaughlin. The 2019 honor marks Miller's third straight season landing on the league's All-GLIAC Second Team, as she earned the honor in the 2017 and 2018 seasons as well. 

Gao lands on the league's All-GLIAC Second Team for the first time after being named an honorable mention honoree the past two seasons. She played at No. 2 Doubles and No. 2 Singles all season, posting a 6-3 overall mark in her singles competition. She teamed-up with Gyselle Daza Gutierrez in doubles play, posting a winning mark at 5-4 as well. 

Johnson had a stellar 7-2 mark for the Cardinals at the No. 6 singles spot and had an overall mark of 4-5 in her doubles matches, playing at the No. 3 spot with Adiya Young and Sara Neves

The Cardinals open play in the 2019 GLIAC Tournament on Friday (Oct. 25) evening, facing the Michigan Tech Huskies at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. SVSU is the No. 6 seed in the tournament while the Huskies are the No. 3 ranked squad.
