Saginaw Valley to Face Ashland in GLIAC Semifinals

ALLENDALE, Mich. — The SVSU Women's soccer team took a victory over Ferris State Tuesday afternoon to grab a seat in the 2017 GLIAC Tournament semifinals held by Grand Valley State. The Cardinals will take on Ashland Friday night beginning at 7:30 p.m. in what will be one of two semifinal match ups held, with hosts Grand Valley State taking on Tiffin beginning at 5 p.m.

The Eagles enter the game after defeating No. 7 seed Northern Michigan 3-0 Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals defeated Ashland 2-1 in a GLIAC conference contest on Oct. 20.

SVSU finished off the regular season play with a 9-6-1 overall record and 4-4-1 in GLIAC play. Ashland enters Friday's match up with a 12-5-1 overall and 7-2 in GLIAC play. Both teams have notched a win in the tournament, with Saginaw Valley sitting at the No. 6 spot and the Eagles at No. 2.

The Cardinals have posted 32 goals on the 2017 season campaign and are currently averaging 1.88 goals per game.

Tuesday's win over Ferris State was the first time SVSU has won a GLIAC quarterfinal game since 2012. In head coach Michael O'Neill's first ever trip to the semifinals with the Cardinals, he is currently only one win away from tying his career-high winning record in a single season at 11, which was earned in his first season with Saginaw Valley during the 2014 campaign.
