MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team made the short trip over to Midland to compete against Northwood University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular season ending matchup at Northwood's Dean Field. In a closely-contested battle between the two teams, SVSU got a late goal from Ashley Henderson and posted a shutout defensively to seal a 1-0 victory over the Timberwolves.

The teams combined for 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes of play, with nine of those coming from Northwood players. None of those would find the back of the net, however, and the teams went to the halftime break in a 0-0 deadlock.

That story would hold true until the 85th minute of the contest, when Ashley Henderson scored a goal off a feed from an Emma Webster corner kick to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

The T-Wolves would get off just a single shot attempt the rest of the way and the Cardinals secured the victory.

  • Claire Spleth made four saves while allowing no goals in the first half of play.
  • Kailey Naumcheff (3-3-0) worked the final 45 minutes of play, earning the win after recording a pair of saves and completing the shutout for the Cards.
  • The Timberwolves held a 19-11 overall edge in shots but SVSU had eight of those shots put on goal compared to Northwood's six.
  • SVSU is 14-1-0 versus the Timberwolves since 2005, with the last loss coming in a 3-2 double overtime contest in the 2004 season.

Inside the Boxscore

"I'm proud of the girls for the way they competed today. We fought hard and made sure we were in the game at all times. This game will give us something to build on for next year when we hope to be competing for championships once again!"

The victory wraps up the 2015 season for the SVSU women's soccer team. The team graduates just three players from this year's team and is set to return a strong nucleus for the 2016 campaign.
