UNIVERSITY CENTER - The SVSU's women's soccer team's bid to make it three straight victories fell just short on Friday (Oct. 16) afternoon, as the Lady Cardinals dropped a close 2-1 contest at home to the Malone University Pioneers in GLIAC action.

The first half didn't feature any scoring but Saginaw Valley held a 5-2 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes of action.

Malone's Christine Najjar got the visitors on the board for the 1-0 lead at the 63:46 marker of the first half off a Brianna Smith feed. The Pioneers would add another goal, extending the lead out to 2-0 when Smith tallied a goal of her own off a Leah Arnold assist at the 84:24 mark.

The Lady Cardinals were held scoreless until there were just 57 seconds left to play. That's when Ashley Henderson notched the lone SVSU goal, finding the back of the net unassisted to make the score 2-1. That's what the final score would prove to be.

From Head Coach Michael O'Neill

"We didn't do enough today to win the game. Malone was tougher than us today and out-worked us. They made it a scrappy game and we didn't respond. We need girls to show character in these last few games, as most of the teams will make it a dog fight."
