Offensive Outburst Keys 8-1 Victory Over Tiffin

UNIVERSITY CENTER - The SVSU women's soccer team bounced back in a huge way after a Friday loss with an 8-1 victory over Tiffin University on Sunday afternoon.

The victory improves the Lady Cardinals to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in GLIAC action. The eight goals for SVSU marked the most since August 25 of the 2006 season when it posted an 8-0 shutout victory over Lewis University.

Saginaw Valley notched the first six goals of the contest, as Ashley Henderson had her second career hat trick with three of the first six goals. Shelby Watts added a goal and assist herself and Isabella Sortzi had her first-career goal as well. After Tiffin scored its only goal of the contest to make the score 6-1, Kristin Syrowik had her second goal of the season, as did Lisa Schade to round out the scoring and seal the 8-1 win.

Henderson added an assist while Whitney Fleming had a goal and assist and Samantha Dunn, Emma Webster and Adrianna Currie all had one assist as well.

"After Friday's loss it wasa extremely important to respond as a team today," said head coach Michael O'Neill. "From the first whistle, we were in control of the game and never really took our foot off the gas. It was great to see the girls step up and take their chances today. We have struggled in front of the goal recently and it has cost us a couple of times. All in all, it was a strong team performance today and we are looking forward to the challenge of GVSU on Tuesday."

Claire Spleth (3-2) got the victory between the posts for the Cards in the conference contest.

The ladies travel to Grand Valley State on Tuesday (Sep. 22) for a 7:00 p.m. contest in Allendale with the #10 Lakers.
