The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team is set to host the Ashland Eagles in a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday (11/4) at Braddock Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm. The teams played earlier in the season on October 3 as the Cardinals defeated the Eagles 2-1 at SVSU.
Saginaw Valley is the #4 seed as they concluded the regular season with a record of 10-2-3 overall and 8-2-2 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals have been led offensively by sophomore Ashley Henderson who has scored a team-high seven goals this year. Defensively, SVSU is allowing 0.57 goals a game which is good for second in the conference. Sophomore goalkeeper Claire Spleth recorded eight shutouts in 15 games and has a save percentage of .899 this year.
Ashland enters the tournament as the #5 seed. The Eagles have won four consecutive games and carry an overall record of 11-6-0 and 7-5-0 in the conference into the tournament. They have been led by freshman Morgan Bittengle who is tied for the second most goals scored in the conference (12) and has recorded four assists in 17 games.
The winner of the game will advance to the GLIAC Tournament semifinals on Friday (11/7). The semifinals will be located at the highest remaining seed's campus.
Last season, Saginaw Valley lost to the Michigan Tech Huskies in the 2013 Women's Soccer GLIAC Tournament. The Huskies scored with only one second remaining in the second overtime session to claim the 1-0 victory.
