Lady Cardinals Drop First Home Contest in 2-0 Loss to Huskies

UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team fell to the Michigan Tech Huskies by a score of 2-0 on Thursday afternoon (10/30) in a matchup of two of the top four teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

The Cardinals fall to 9-2-3 overall with a 7-2-2 mark in the GLIAC while the Huskies improve to 10-2-2 overall and 8-1-2 in the GLIAC with the victory.

Michigan Tech out-shot Saginaw Valley in the first half by a margin of seven to one but the teams would head into the halftime break with the score still tied at 0-0.

The Huskies would break the scoreless tie early in the second half at the 48:23 mark when Annie Dahlquist was able to use a pass in the box to head one past SVSU goalkeeper Claire Spleth to give Tech a 1-0 lead.

The best chance for the Cardinals came in the 65th minute when a hand ball called in the box gave SVSU a free kick.  Freshman Stefanie Klug fired one just high over the net as the score remained 1-0 in Tech's favor.

Michigan Tech would add another goal at the 66:22 mark on a pass in the box that was headed past Spleth to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

SVSU would put a couple shots on goal late in the game but got nothing past the Huskie goalkeeper as Tech would hold on for a 2-0 victory.

Spleth suffered only her second loss of the season while making six saves in net for the Lady Cards.

Saginaw Valley returns to action on Saturday (11/1) on Senior Day as it hosts the Northern Michigan Wildcats in the final regular season contest of the year.  The game is scheduled to start at 12:00 pm at SVSU's Braddock Field.
