Women's Soccer Ties at Walsh, 0-0

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team, ranked #20 nationally in the latest NSCAA Top-25 Poll, traveled to take on the Walsh University Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon (10/19) in a GLIAC matchup.

Despite many opportunities for each team, neither squad was able to find the back of the net through regulation and two overtime periods, resulting in a 0-0 tie.

The Lady Cardinals had a commanding advantage in shots throughout regulation, posting an 8-3 edge in the first half and out-shooting the Cavaliers by a 7-0 margin in the final 45 minutes of regulation play.

After a scoreless regulation, the teams would head into the first overtime period.  Both teams were unable to get a shot off in the first 10 minutes of bonus play and the match would extend into the double-overtime period.

Walsh had two scoring opportunities in the second overtime when the home team put a couple of shots on goal, but SVSU goalkeeper Claire Spleth made saves on both chances and kept the Cavs scoreless for the contest.

Despite holding an overall 15-5 advantage in shots for the match, the Lady Cardinals didn't get a shot off in either overtime period and the contest would finish with the scoreless draw.

Spleth faced five shots on goal for the afternoon, stopping all of them.  The tie makes her record 8-1-3 for the 2014 season.  The Cards put nine shots on goal as well, but Walsh goalkeeper Dani Shambaugh stopped all nine and remained unbeaten on the season at 5-0-3.

Presley Tibbetts had a team-high three shots with two of those being put on goal for SVSU.

"We're disappointed not to have come away with the three points today," stated SVSU Head Coach Michael O'Neill.  "Walsh was organized and disciplined in its approach but we were still able to create some really good goal-scoring opportunities.  We are delighted with another shutout but know we need to have that killer instinct in the final third to win those games.  We will learn from it and get back to work, as there is still of soccer yet to be played."

The tie puts the Cardinals' record at 8-1-3 overall on the season and 6-1-2 in the GLIAC while Walsh is now 7-2-4 overall and 4-1-3 in league action.

Saginaw Valley returns to the field on Friday (10/24) when the Cards travel to the University of Findlay for a 4:00 pm matchup against the Oilers.
