Women's Soccer Opens Home Slate with 2-0 Victory Over Northwood

UNIVERSITY CENTER – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team defeated GLIAC rival Northwood at Braddock Field on Sunday (9/21) afternoon, 2-0 in the team's 2014 home opener.

The majority of the first half was played in the rain, but that did not stop the Cardinals offense.  The Lady Cards were able to get off 11 shots in the opening half.  SVSU was finally able to find the back of the net when sophomore forward Ashley Henderson scored her second goal of the season at the 29:15 mark.  The goal would be the only one of the half and the Cards headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The second half was played in similar fashion as the Cardinals controlled the majority of play all afternoon.  SVSU was able to extend their lead to 2-0 when sophomore Shelby Watts scored her first goal of the season at the 49:03 mark when she knocked a loose ball into the top-right corner of the net.

The Cards showed excellent defensive play all afternoon.  Claire Spleth remained unbeaten in net for the Cards, and finished the afternoon with one save, facing only two shots total.

The victory keeps the Cardinals' unbeaten record in-tact as they improve to 4-0-1 and 2-0-0 in GLIAC play.  The Timberwolves fall to 1-3-1 and 0-1-0 in the GLIAC.  SVSU returns to action this weekend as they travel to Ohio for a pair of GLIAC matches.  The Lady Cards play the Tiffin Dragons on Friday (9/26) and the Ohio Dominican Panthers on Sunday (9/28).
