Two Late First Half Goals Propel Women's Soccer to 2-0 Victory Over Bellarmine

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team finished its trip to the 2014 Tiffin University Dragon Tournament with a 2-0 record after defeating Bellarmine on Sunday (9/7) by a score of 2-0.

The Lady Cardinals notched a pair of late first half goals to carry a two-goal lead heading into the break.  At the 42:14 mark, freshman Alexis Hilliard used a feed from fellow freshman Stefanie Klug and found the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

Not even two minutes later, Klug set up another teammate to extend the SVSU lead to a pair of goals.  This time Klug knocked a corner into junior Annie Aubrey, who headed it into the goal for the 2-0 lead.

Saginaw Valley out-shot the Knights by a count of 8-3 in the first half.

Bellarmine would get 10 shots off in the second half compared to 6 for the Cards, but sophomore goalie Claire Spleth was solid in goal once more.  Spleth stopped all four shots on goal the Knights had, posting her second-consecutive shutout.

"Another solid team performance," said Cardinal Head Coach Michael O'Neill, who begins his collegiate coaching career with a pair of victories.  "The girls worked hard and stood strong against a good Bellarmine team.  We have put so much work in on the defensive side, so it's great to be leaving Ohio with two clean sheets!"

The victory puts Saginaw Valley at 2-0-0 on the young season while Bellarmine falls to 1-2-0 overall in 2014.  The Lady Cardinals return to action on Wednesday (9/10) with a home match against Delta College that begins at 4:00 pm.
