SVSU Women Clinch Spot In GLIAC Tournament After 4-0 Win Over Dragons

University Center, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team defeated Tiffin, 4-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 2).  In doing so, the Lady Cardinals clinched a spot in the 2013 GLIAC Tournament.

The extremely sloppy playing surface proved to be difficult for both teams to adapt to in the opening minutes.  Saginaw Valley managed to gain their footing half-way through the opening half, however, and never looked back.

Jennifer Goethals opened up the scoring in the 30th minute, scoring off of a through ball from fellow freshman Ashley Henderson.

Henderson would add her name to the scoresheet at the 36:40 mark, when Goethals put in a great ball that she met with her head and sent to the back of the net.  The goal was Henderson's 10th goal of the season and it game the team a 2-0 halftime lead.

Marci Northuis continued the scoring for the Cardinals off of a beautiful through ball from Shelby Wright at the 53:09 mark, making the score 3-0.

The scoring concluded in the 75th minute, when Olivia Perrin received a hard fought ball from Andrea Grove to beat the Tiffin goalkeeper from 10 yards out and extend the lead to 4-0.

Kailey Naumcheff made five saves on the day en-route to earning her third shutout of the season.

SVSU improves to 7-8-1 on the season and 5-7-0 in the conference while Tiffin drops to 4-12-1 overall and 3-8-1 in the GLIAC.

The Cardinals now wait for the season finales to conclude around the league to determine its seeding in the GLIAC Tournament, which is set to begin Tuesday (Nov. 5).
