Women's Soccer Loses Opener At Tusculum Kickoff Tournament

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team traveled to Greeneville, Tennessee to open its 2013 season on the road at the Tusculum Kickoff Tournament.

The Cardinals came away with a season-opening loss, falling by a score of 1-0 to the University of North Alabama.

The first period saw SVSU out-shoot the Lions by an 11-4 margin, as neither team could capitalize and the match went scoreless heading into halftime.

Saginaw Valley would open the second frame with four consecutive shots, but the first shot by North Alabama's Stacey Webber found the back of the net, making the score 1-0 at the 55:06 mark in the match.

That would be the only scoring of the day for either team.

Freshman Jennifer Goethals (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS) had two of SVSU's three shots on goal while junior Kali Barry (Mason, Mich./Mason HS) had the other.

The Cardinals return to action tomorrow (Sept. 8) in their second match of the Kickoff Tournament, facing the University of California (Pa.) in an 11:00 am matchup.
