Lady Cardinals Fall to Huskies, 3-1

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team fell to the Michigan Technological University Huskies today (Oct. 5), 3-1, in a match-up of the second and third-place teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

SVSU entered the week No. 8 in the NSCAA Division II Regional Rankings while Michigan Tech came in at No. 5.

Michigan Tech opened up the scoring at the 16:28 mark of the first half with a shot to the lower back post to take the early 1-0 edge. The Huskies struck once again in the first half in the 34th minute on a nicely placed ball that snuck in the top-left corner of the net as the Cardinals faced a 2-0 deficit heading into the intermission.

After an early goal in the second half pushed the Huskies' lead to 3-0, Charley Porter (Midland, Mich.) capitalized on her third goal of the season from Kali Barry (Mason, Mich. ) with a deep shot from the right side to beat the Tech goalkeeper to get the Cardinals on the scoreboard at the 67:07 mark.

However, Michigan Tech would not allow the Cardinals to get any closer as they took the match by a final tally of 3-1.

Kellsey Poston (New Boston, Mich. / Huron HS) recorded two of Saginaw Valley's four shots on goal, while Porter added two of her own.

The loss moves the Cardinals to 4-2-4 overall on the season and 3-1-3 in the GLIAC, while Michigan Tech improves to 8-2 on the season and 6-0 in the conference.

Saginaw Valley will return to action on Sunday (Oct. 7) when they battle Northern Michigan University for a noon start.
