Cardinals Down Timberwolves in Home Opener, 4-1

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team tamed the Northwood University Timberwolves by a 4-1 final this afternoon (Sept. 7) in the Lady Cardinal's home opener at the SVSU Soccer Complex. This matchup was a non-conference bout between the two neighboring GLIAC schools. The victory is the first for the SVSU women's soccer program, who now move to 1-1-1 on the season.

The Cardinals kicked off their 2012 home opener early with Annie Aubrey (Jackson, Mich. / Jackson HS) finding the back of the net for a score with a blistering kick at the 2:40 minute mark into the first half on an assist from Lexie Brisson-Fast (Ferndale, Mich. / Ferndale HS).

Three minutes and forty-five seconds later, Charley Porter (Midland, Mich. / Midland HS) would find the back of the net from 40 yards out on a pass from freshmen Presley Tibbetts (Grandville, Mich. / Grandville HS). Saginaw Valley would hold their 2-0 lead over the Timberwolves into the second half of the game.

The Cardinals came out for the second half of play with the same full head of steam when senior Kristen Tomczyk (Lapeer, Mich. / Lapeer East HS) headed a Porter corner kick at the far post into the net at the 49:39 minute mark to go up 3-0.

The Timberwolves answered back with their only score of the afternoon on a goal from Alyssa Tomassi. The Cardinals tallied their forth goal of the contest with an unassisted 30 yard boot off the foot of Tibbetts, as the Cardinals cruised to a 4-1 victory over Northwood in a non-conference tilt.

Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Ivezaj (Rochester Hills, Mich.) stopped nine shots in the game, earning her first win of the season (1-1-1).

The Cardinals will return to action next Friday (Sept. 14) when they host the Pioneers of Malone University for a 2:00 PM start at the SVSU Soccer Complex.
