Cardinals Fall in Season Opener, 2-1

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team fell in their 2012 season opener to Lewis University today (Aug. 30) by a score of 2-1 in overtime.

SVSU (0-1-0) found themselves down 1-0 to the Flyers (1-0-0) after Lauren Bowles found the back of the net in the 32nd minute.

The two defenses would tighten until Charley Porter (Midland, Mich.) was able to blast a ball by the Flyer goalkeeper from 15-yards out for the first Cardinal goal of the season in the 79th minute on an assist from Andrea Grove (Farmington, Mich. / Farmington HS) to tie the score at 1-1. From there, the defenses would once again stand tall and force the game into overtime.

The Flyers would quickly strike in overtime to end the game on a goal by Jessica Saffell in the 91st minute to give the Cardinals their first loss of the season.

Laura Ivezaj (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester HS) (0-1) took the loss in net for the Cardinals, allowing 2 goals, while making four saves.

The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 1) when they travel to play Wisconsin-Parkside at 2:30 PM.
