Cardinals Tame Timberwolves, 3-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team defeated Northwood University 3-0 today (Sept. 7) in its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest of the season.

The Cardinals lit up the scoreboard first in its home opener when sophomore Kellsey Poston (New Boston, Mich. / Huron HS) headed the ball in off of a free kick in the 44th minute. Saginaw Valley would  carry their 1-0 lead over the Timberwolves into the second half of play.

The Cardinals would take a 2-0 advantage when senior Samantha Echols (Wolverine Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS) found the back of the net off a pass from freshman Kali Barry (Mason, Mich.). Saginaw Valley scored their final goal of the contest when sophomore Shelby Wright (Fishers, Ind.) scored on a one touch pass from Poston allowing the Cardinals to go on to a 3-0 victory.

Freshman goaltender Laura Ivezaj (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and the Saginaw Valley defense kept the Northwood offense to only six shots on goal. Ivezaj is now 2-0 on the season and recorded her second consecutive shut-out.

With the win the Cardinals improve to 2-0 overall on the season, and 1-0 in the GLIAC, while Northwood falls to 1-1 overall on the season, and 0-1 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley will be back in action when they travel to Ferris State on Friday (Sept. 9). Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
