UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team tied GLIAC (Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) rival Grand Valley State University 2-2 in double overtime today (Sept. 12).
Saginaw Valley took the early lead in the contest when freshman Shelby Wright (Fishers, Ind./Fishers HS) crossed the ball from the left side of the field to sophomore Kristen Tomczyk (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East HS) for her second goal of the season. Grand Valley answered back to the goal at the 15:54 mark on a volley from a corner kick. The Lakers went up 2-1 when they scored on a free kick late in the first half.
The Cardinals knotted the score at two with just four minutes left in the contest when sophomore Lara English (Charlotte, Mich./Charlotte HS) played the ball across the box to sophomore Tiffany Bell (Troy, Mich./Troy Athens HS) forcing the game into two overtimes. Both ten minute overtimes remained scoreless as the game ended in a 2-2 tie for the GLIAC rivals. Junior goaltender Anne Berschbach (Algonac, Mich./Algonac HS) ended the day saving 12 of the 14 shots she faced making her 3-1-1 overall on the season.
With the tie Saginaw Valleys record moves to 3-1-1 overall on the season and 2-0-1 in the GLIAC, which Grand Valleys moves to 4-0-1 overall on the season and 2-0-1 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday (Sept. 17) when they face Tiffin University in a GLIAC contest. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
