SVSU Tackles Findlay, 3-0; Advances in GLIAC Tournament

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer team won their first-round GLIAC Tournament match against Findlay University today (Nov. 4) 3-0.

All of the match’s scoring came in the second half, as the Cardinals used the wind to their advantage to help move the ball into the Oiler’s end of the field. Offensively, SVSU was lead by senior forward Kim Oberski (Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron HS) who had two goals and one assist on the afternoon. The Cardinals’ first goal came off the foot of junior Jaclyn Barrett (Williamston, Mich./Williamston HS) at the 64:07 mark. Seventeen minutes later, freshman forward Samantha Echols (Walled Lake, Mich./Central HS) and Oberski would connect giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Less than five minutes later Oberski would take a pass from Echols, dribble to the middle of the field and unleash a shot into the corner of the Oiler’s net to round out the game’s scoring.

Freshman Anne Bershbach (Algonac, Mich./Lutheran North HS) and sophomore Brianne Donaldson (Kimball, Mich./Port Huron HS) preserved the shutout for the Cardinals in the net. Bershbach made 10 saves on the afternoon before coming out of the game at the 86:37 mark. Donaldson did not face a shot from the Findlay offense.

The win moves SVSU’s record to 9-8 overall record -- as Findlay falls to 6-11-1 on the season -- and advances the Cardinals to the semi-final round of the GLIAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed against No. 2 seed Tiffin University at noon Friday (Nov. 7) in Allendale, Mich.
