UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – In a game that
could have been hampered by high winds, the Saginaw Valley State
University women’s soccer team used the wind to their
advantage as they pounded visiting Ashland University 5-1 today
(Oct. 19) at the SVSU Soccer Complex.
The Cardinals got on the board early in the contest when sophomore
midfielder Cassidy Lay ( Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) buried the ball
in the back of the net. A few minutes later, it was sophomore
midfielder Haley Weingartz’s (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East HS)
turn off a pass from sophomore defender Lauren Saigh (Sterling
Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) to give the Cardinals the edge
2-0. At the 36 minute mark, the Cardinals would score another goal
by junior midfielder Renee Privette from senior midfielder
Stephanie Roy (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero HS) to take the Cardinals
into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
In the second half, the Cardinals facing an uphill battle against
the wind notched their fourth goal of the game when Roy pounded a
shot in the back of the net. Eight minutes later, the Eagles would
notch their lone goal of the contest. At the 75:28 mark, the
Cardinals would score the final goal of the match with junior
