BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — On a cold, and cloudy
day, the Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer team
invaded Ferris State and came away with a 3-1 victory.
It didn’t take either team long to get the day’s
scoring underway, as Ferris scored at the 5:23 minute mark in the
first half. Less than seven minutes later, the Cardinals were given
a penalty shot, and senior mid fielder Stephanie Roy (Royal Oak,
Mich. (Dondero HS) didn’t miss, knotting the score at 1-1.
Fourteen minutes later, junior Jaclyn Barrett (Williamston,
Mich./Williamston HS) received a pass from junior Sarah Peters
(Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) and buried the ball in the upper right
corner to close out the first half.
In the first half, the Cardinals’ offense kept the pressure
on the Bulldog defense by unleashing 13 shots, while holding Ferris
to just seven shots at Anne Bershbach during the first 45 of
play.
During the second half, the offensive tides appeared to turn to
aid the Bulldogs, as they were able to rip 12 shots, but
couldn’t connect. But, it was Cardinals’ senior Kim
Oberski (Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron HS) who got the lone goal of
the second half as she broke away from the Ferris State defense on
a pass from Roy to cap the day’s scoring.
The victory moves the Cardinals to 4-3 overall, and 4-1 in the
GLIAC as they prepare for their next showdown at noon on Sunday
(Oct. 5) as SVSU takes on rival Grand Valley State University in
Allendale, Mich.
